1. an elderly woman who has not married; old maid: »

2. an unmarried woman.
3. British. any girl or woman of marriageable age who has yet to marry (used since the 1600's as a legal description).
4. a woman who spins flax, wool, or the like, into thread: »

the spinsters and the knitters in the sun (Shakespeare).

5. Archaic. any unmarried gentlewoman.
